Preps spreadsheet

My bride and I have been trying to find the best way to keep track of our preps. Looks like a spreadsheet inventory would probably be best.

I'm interested in what everyone esle does, and if you have a spreadsheet, I'd love to see the format.

We're looking at grouping like:
Food
Toiletries
emergency
medical
etc.

Thanks, SilverJeep

Re: Preps spreadsheet

are you looking for something for just quantity, ( how much of each )
or how much everything cost too ?

and what about foodstuffs ? . date of purchase / expiry date / when to rotate ?

There was actually one linked to that "doomsayers of our time" article last week.

http://multimedia.thestar.com/acroba...cdb5435d58.pdf

The problem is that they took a spreadsheet and converted it to a .pdf. How stupid is that?

I've been trying to find a way to get it in spreadsheet format. Apparently someone name "Calan Boyle" put it together.

Really just looking to see what others use. I'm not real concerned with the costs, but the other factors are important.

too many little food items on that .pdf spreadsheet for my liking

keep it simple

protein/carbs/fats - a variety of each

I emailed the author of the article praising him and asking for a copy of the spreadsheet in native format.

Even if we don't entirely agree with the content then it's often easier to modify another's worth than re-invent the wheel. I'll post if I get a response.

Food Storage Planner

It comes with a sample pantry, but the way to do it is to start with a list of basics like the LDS list for adults and children and then build your own pantry based on what you eat in your home. Add your own items and calculate how much you consume in a week or month and then tell the spreadsheet how many you need to complete whatever storage time you want and it will tell you how many units you still need to buy. You can also print your shopping list.

I would say the best course of action is to quit screwing around with numbers, charts, graphs, spread your "sheet" out and GO SHOPPING.
Step one: BUY FOOD.
Step Two, bring food home, and stack it high and dry.
Step 3 repeat steps one and two.
Step 4 think about other useful items, such as Ammunition, Whiskey, batteries, blankets, T.P., candles, Medical/first-aid, fuel, wool socks, A NEW pair of boots.

Re: Preps spreadsheet

Guess what I just found in my saved files?

A copy of the very same XLS spreadsheet file as the guy who made the pdf used. It's got the lists started, but no entries, so it's a clean copy... anyone who wants it can PM me an email address and I will attempt to see if it will attach to send......

Oh, and a reason not to just ignore all the numbers is for those of us who have things spread out and stored where we can't just check inventory at a glance. The first link I posted will also track expiration dates and other info you may want to know.

I don't consider it screwing around with numbers. By your directions I will have piles of stuff and not have any idea as to how much I have or when it expires. Not know if I have enough of something to spare for barter, to prepare different meals.

Your system works great when you haven't bought much.

That is quite accurate. I went out and bought hundred of pounds of white rice, lots of beans, oatmeal, dehydrated potatoes, pancake mix, etc. last year. I packed these in mylar bags with O2 absorbers and into food grade buckets.

Sure, I have a fuzzy idea of what I have, but beyond that, forget about it. Do I have enough of good xyz to last x number of months? Beats the heck out of me.

Yes, it is important to get out and do it. But once you start, you DO need a system. This is also true when it comes to keeping inventory of what is buried in your chest freezer and the back of the fridge!

I have a big note pad upon entereing my food room, every time something goes in the room, it gets wrote down on the pad. I thought about putting it in my computer, but did not really want that kind of info on my puter - that is hooked up to the web.

The second thing that should send up a red flag about that PDF spreadsheet, is that under the Booze category, there wasn't a line item for Beer. And only wine. Uh. Cmon now. Really? This aught to tell you everything you need to know about the above said pdf. :sarc:

With beer, you need to stick to a precise rotation scheme.

We're in the same boat. From back of the envelope math, I think I've got enough Calories stored for a 2500 Cal/day diet (with something resembling proper distribution of carbs, protein, fats) for 2 people for a year. But I lack hard counts. Thankfully, I did attach an inventory sheet to each sealed bucket, but there's also a large amount of canned and freeze dried food in Rubbermaid containers down in the basement, with no such info. In reality, I have no good info on what I've got. That must be corrected and soon.

Re: Preps spreadsheet

I use a notebook, divided up into various categories. On foods, I tried to get pretty extensive on calorie value, etc, so I'd have a rough idea of length of time for 2 people.

Other things, like toilet paper for example, I would try to watch how much we use a week/month, and then tried to put enough away to last what I thought was a comfortable period.

Things like fuel, ammo, etc, where more is always going to be better, I just follow Fullpower's method......get some, then get some more.....but even things like fuel, you have to watch doesn't get TOO oil on you. I rotated gasoline here a week or two ago, trying to use up some that was 2-3 years old, and replace with fresh ( with PRI-G ) while the price is low.

One thing I do like about some kind of organization, it lets you start seeing potential "holes" in your planning. And trying to put enough 'stuff' away for a year or two of nearly complete withdrawal from modern society is a truly daunting task, let me tell ya.

No use to put away 4 years worth of food, and lack a way to saw wood and freeze to death the first winter.

lol, yer gonna have to speak English there, pardner....

If I knew how to do either, I would, but I *did* do a little inkernet searching and I found this:

http://standeyo.com/News_Files/Food/DFSP.html

Scroll down to the section titled
DEYO FOOD STORAGE PLANNER

Download the updated version of this spreadsheet there.

I also found a good one here: http://www.simplylivingsmart.com/cal...readsheet.html

There are others, but at first glance, these 2 seemed to be the best. If you'd like to search for others, just type "free food storage spreadsheet" into Google and it pulls up all sorts of stuff.

I think I'm going to try and update my file... been a while since I added anything to it.
